S2 E11 Why We Enter Bereavement
Life Talk with Bern Moses
Life Talk continues its bereavement series, expanding grief “tools” beyond death to divorce, separation, and loss of job or business. Moses introduces “open palm theory,” urging acceptance that people and possessions are temporary so love can be appreciated without clinging. He stresses preparing and viewing the body when possible, warning against immediate cremation because it can shortcut needed confrontation and release. He argues closure requires repeatedly forgiving, making amends (including self-forgiveness), saying goodbye, and expressing “I love you” in present tense—at gravesides, in letters, or through spoken mental rehearsal when no body is available. He also notes funerals should reflect the person, and that unprocessed pet loss or childhood guilt can shape adult decisions.
